What is the Arezzo Antiques Fair
The Arezzo Antiques Fair is the largest antiques fair in Italy, and is therefore one of the must-attend recurring events for those wishing to visit the city.
Whether you are looking for a fine work of art, a piece to add to your collection of historical artifacts , as an antiques enthusiast, or if you are simply curious to discover what wonders antiques can offer this is definitely the city for you. Hundreds of
exhibitors bring to life, with their stalls, a fair with an atmosphere as unique as the wonders displayed along the streets of the center of Arezzo.
Originals and Revival of Piazza Grande
Many years ago, in the climax of his career, Ivan Bruschi realized a dream he had always kept in the drawer. This vision combined his passion for antiques and art with his love for his hometown. Thus, on June 2, 1968, during Republic Day, saw
the birth of the Antiques Fair. This event became the first of its kind in Italy. Even after decades, it remained the largest, taking place monthly without interruption. The post-war period had seen the decay of many parts of the city, particularly due to the
bombings of World War II. Many historic buildings were destroyed, and Piazza Grande lost its historic fruit and vegetable market from the 1960s. However, with the birth of the Antique Fair, the square regained its vitality. Bruschi, in conceiving this project, took
inspiration from the famous Portobello markets in London and the Flea Market in Paris.
The Cultural and Economic Impact of the Fair
The growing success of the Antiques Fair was not long in coming. This triumph encouraged Bruschi to promote additional events. Before long, the Fair attracted the attention not only of the Italian public, but also of the international public. Arezzo, with its event, became a
point of reference in the world of antiques. Thus, thanks to Bruschi’s commitment and international connections, prominent figures in politics, culture and entertainment visited the Fair. Antiques, thanks to these events, became a fundamental pillar for
Arezzo‘s economy. The old foundations of the historic center once again teemed with life, hosting workshops and artisans. The City of Arezzo honored the legacy left by Bruschi by investing resources in the Antiques Fair. This heritage has become an emblem of the city,
celebrating its history and culture.
The Arezzo Antiques Fair is the largest antiques fair in Italy
With each edition of the Fair, the streets of downtown fill with people. Now in its fifty-fourth year of Antiques Fairs, the exhibitors, with their large stalls full of precious heirlooms, have grown to as many as 400.
The amount of tourists visiting the city of Arezzo each year for the Fair alone has reached peaks of 200,000 people, leading the event to achieve the record of Italy’s largest Antiques Fair.
Where the Antiques Fair is located
The Antiques Fair is located in the middle of the historic center of the city of Arezzo. From the very central Piazza Grande, the fair branches out in a checkerboard pattern through the streets of the center, from Corso Italia to Via Guido Monaco, crossing the entire central hill and filling the streets with exhibitors and enthusiasts.
Where to park to reach the Antiques Fair
The Antiques Fair, as we said, attracts a large number of tourists, enthusiasts, onlookers and exhibitors with each edition. That is why it is good to move prepared: we recommend the Parcheggio Pietri, on Pietri Street, just behind the city’s central hill. From here you can comfortably reach the historic center with a handy escalator that will take you in front of the Cathedral of San Donato. At this point you will find the Fair as soon as you arrive, all you have to do is walk down the streets to admire the exhibitors at work!
History of the Antiques Fair
The Antiques Fair was conceived by Arezzo antiques dealer Ivan Bruschi more than 50 years ago. Inspired by the famous open-air markets of Portobello Road in London and the picturesque Flea Market in Paris, the Fair was inaugurated for Republic Day on June 2, 1968.
In this way, the upper part of the City began to fill with life once again, after a period of neglect and marginalization that began sadly with the bombing of the historic center during World War II. Many of the historic buildings and houses had been razed to the ground
and the reconstruction period was in fact very long. In the meantime, the wonderful Great Square had also abandoned in the early 1960s the historic tradition of the Saturday fruit and vegetable market-famous back in late medieval times.
When will the next Antiques Fair take place?
The Arezzo Antiques Fair takes place every first Sunday of the month, including the preceding Saturday.
